7.5% interest on deposits, maturity in 2 years, the government has discontinued the scheme
Mahila Samman Saving Certificate Scheme: There are several central government schemes that directly benefit women. One such scheme is the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate. Under this scheme, women receive secure returns on their investments with a fixed interest rate. However, investments in the scheme have officially been discontinued as of March 31, 2025. This means that no new deposits or investments are accepted under the scheme after this date. However, those who have invested earlier will be nearing their maturity period.
About the scheme
The Mahila Samman Savings Certificate Scheme was a one-time small savings scheme with a two-year term. The scheme was available until March 2025. Since the scheme's deadline was March 31, 2025, the maturity date is also two years later, March 31, 2027. Under the scheme, a maximum investment of ₹2 lakh could be made in the name of a woman or girl. The minimum investment limit was ₹1,000, and subsequent deposits could be made in multiples of ₹100. The scheme's most significant feature is its fixed interest rate of 7.5 percent per annum, which is considered higher than many bank fixed deposit (FD) schemes. Interest is calculated quarterly and continues to compound with the principal amount. The scheme has a two-year maturity period, and upon maturity, investors receive the principal amount plus the full interest.
Partial withdrawal facility
The Mahila Samman Savings Certificate Scheme also offers partial withdrawals. Investors can withdraw up to 40 percent of their deposit amount after one year of account opening. This feature is useful in situations where an investor needs money unexpectedly.
Additionally, premature closure is also possible under certain circumstances. If the account is closed without reason six months after opening, interest is paid at a rate of 5%. Premature closure is also permitted in humanitarian circumstances, such as the account holder's death or serious illness.
